The Stort runs along the top of the town, and the towpath beside it at Harlow Mill is soft ground from October through to April. Parndon Wood is wetter again, and the tracks that link one part of Harlow to the next are grass and clay wherever they leave the tarmac. All of that walks back to the car rather than being driven through, so it ends up in the footwells and across the back seat.
